Play time: Coastal farmhouse design toy storage

Since our house was built in 1946, when rooms were much smaller and cozier back then than they are today, every bit of square footage counts in our house, and we have to make it work for us and our lifestyle.

With a young, growing family, that means practically every space has to be kid friendly with furniture that will stand up to spills and nicks, and no space is off-limits (even our "formal" dining room is used for play or pretend grocery shopping trips). And given the footprint of our house, our living room also currently doubles as a playroom. So while our home is designed with little ones in mind, it also has to do double-duty and still feel chic and stylish once playtime is over.

With that in mind, I wanted to create a place that would be practical and functional for storing my daughter's toy collection, but would also look beautiful, stylish, and blend in more with the decor and aesthetic of our home. And the best part? It only took 3 pieces and one afternoon to set up! See how I created this coastal farmhouse inspired chic and stylish toy storage solution:

The "Before"

I found the ideal console table - with the crossbar detail and natural wood look, it's the perfect blend of farmhouse meets coastal style. It comes in a variety of colors and finishes, but I chose the unfinished wood version because I love the natural wood look, and can always repaint it in the future if my design style changes. Plus, the double shelves meant extra room for storage, and it was so easy to put together:

Next, I used these white rope baskets with leather handles from Target to store smaller toys. I love that the white rope style with leather handles adds a coastal vibe, and the style is classic and neutral enough to go with any decor. And they fit perfectly on the shelves:

Finally, I topped the console table with this gray striped table runner, and added a lamp and some decor accents like framed photos, a candle, and a vase of flowers in a mason jar (an actual preserved bridesmaid bouquet from my wedding!):

And that's it - my coastal, farmhouse inspired toy storage. While I'm realistic and know that not every single toy can be kept out of view (especially because that would make it impossible for my daughter to find what she needs - so not practical design!), at least this look gives a more styled, customized, and grown up feel to the play area. Now I really don't mind picking up toys, especially because the space is not only functional but beautiful...even after playtime is over!
