Polka Dot Paradise: Girl's Bedroom Design

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

I still remember my first bedroom as a young girl that I was able to make "design decisions" about...from picking out the tiny pink polka dotted wallpaper to choosing the pastel pink, purple, green, and yellow printed fabrics and ruffle trim to sew and stuff my own pillows (with my mom's help, of course). I was able to experience the feeling of creating and spending time in a haven that you absolutely love and feels uniquely "you."

Since that's the experience that I aim to provide my clients with, when it came time to design my daughter's "big sister" room as she transitioned out of the nursery, I thought, "Why not let her give her input and be part of the process?" As young as she is, I still believe it's valuable to allow her to have a say, practice her decision making skills, and let her play a part in creating the space where she will dream and play. Her main request? "A pink room!" So here's how I created this "big sister" space that can spark her imagination but also grow up with her over the years:

Here's the design mood board that was used to plan the color palette and envision the space...

...And here's the completed design! The color palette is various shades of pink (of course) with white and pastel color pops like mint and aqua:

The white bed is a family heirloom, and just needed a fresh coat of white chalk paint and brand new colorful bedding. Love this bed skirt. It reminds me of a ballerina tutu!

This nightstand was a refurbished piece found a decade ago at HomeGoods. Fresh paint (Sherwin Williams' Mountain Air for the drawers and Essential Gray for the frames) and new glass and chrome cabinet knobs give this a sweet makeover. Faux pink dahlias, a framed photo and bedside lamp complete the look:

This pink polka dot accent wall adds whimsy and color pops, and plays off the pink bedskirt, quilt and throw pillow:

This reading nook provides a cozy space for bedtime stories, play, or quiet daydreaming:

The dresser decor is fun and whimsical, like this little snow globe with pastel colored macaroons inside. The pink polka dot pattern on the accent wall is even repeated on the piggy bank:

A positive and uplifting daily reminder:

And of course, a touch of greenery:

The best part? Seeing how happy she is to spend time in a carefully designed haven that was created with her in mind, and one that's all her own.
